"Off with their heads!"

Miranda Richardson as The Queen of Hearts

Description: Miranda Richardson as the Queen of Hearts issues a royal command in the Hallmark presentation of Alice in Wonderland (1999).

The Queen of Hearts rules in the kingdom of Wonderland, a world discovered by a young girl named Alice when she chases a white rabbit down a rabbit hole.

The hot-tempered Queen of Hearts is quick to lop off the heads of anyone who doesn't agree with her or carry out their work assignments properly—like painting the roses in her garden.

When Alice arrives in court of the Queen of Hearts, she wants to cut off Alice's head for assisting the Knave of Hearts, but, of course, she survives. Whenever a person is taken away to be executed, the King of Heart arranges to pardon those who have been sentenced for decapitation.

The Queen of Hearts character has been played by a variety of actresses including:

  • Vie Quinn - Alice in Wonderland (1931)
  • May Robson - Alice in Wonderland (1933)

Note: The Queen of Hearts first appeared in the classic children’s tale Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (1865) written by English author Charles Lutwidge Dodgson under the pseudonym Lewis Carroll.

Alice - The Queen of Hearts

A similar royal figure known as the Red Queen appears in the sequel novel Through the Looking Glass (1871) , but this queen is different from the Queen of Hearts, but they are often thought to be the same such as when Helena Bonham Carter plays the Red Queen in the motion picture Alice in Wonderland (2010) wherein Mia Wasikowska as Alice Kingsleigh, now 19-years-old, returns to Wonderland ("Underland") after a previous visit 13 years earlier.

To save the inhabitants of Underland, Alice must slay a dragon-like creature called the Jabberwocky (under the control of The Red Queen) and restore the rightful ruler (The White Queen) to the throne.

In the film The Man in the Iron Mask (1998) Louis XIV, the King of France (Leonardo DiCaprio) shouts, “Bring me the heads of Athos, Porthos, and Aramis, or I will have yours."
