"You’re the disease...and I’m the cure!"
Description: Deadly diagnosis delivered by Sylvester Stallone as police Lieutenant Marion Cobretti in the action adventure Cobra (1986).
Detective Marion Cobretti is a member of the “Zombie Squad” a Los Angeles police organization that specializes in dirty jobs that nobody else wants.
|Killer:||Get back! I got a bomb here! I'll blow this whole place up!|
|Cobretti:||Go ahead. I don't shop here. All right, just relax, Amigo. You wanna talk - we'll talk. I'm a sucker for great conversation.|
|Killer:||I don't wanna talk to you! Now you bring the television cameras in here now! C'mon, bring 'em in!|
|Cobretti:||Can't do that.|
|Cobretti:||I don't deal with psychos. I put them away.|
|Killer:||I ain't no psycho, man! I'm a HERO! You're looking at a fuckin' hunter! I'm a hero of the New World!|
|Cobretti:||[shakes his head] You're a disease - and I'm the cure.|
|Killer:||Die! [The thug points a shotgun and Cobretti throws a knife into the thug's abdomen)|
|Cobretti:||Drop it! [Cobretti fires five bullets when the guy refuses to give up the bomb - which Corbetti then takes from the thug's dead hand]|
As Cobretti leaves the supermarket where he disarmed the guy with a bomb, the media crowds around him looking for a sound byte for the evening news. When a reporter asks, "Did you use unnecessary deadly force?" Cobra replies, "I used everything I had."
Frustrated with Cobretti's outlandish antics, his police supervisor says, "You know you have an attitude problem." To which, Cobretti replies, "Yeah, but it's just a little one."
Later, in the film an army of crazed "New World" extremists stalk a woman (Brigette Nielsen) who witnesses a murder, and Cobretti becomes her protector.
In the climatic finale, Cobretti enters a steel mill in search of "The Night Slasher" (Brian Thompson). Wielding a deadly knife, the psychotic killer snarls:
“Where are you, pig? I want your eyes, pig. I want them. Do you wanna go to hell? Huh? Huh, pig? Do you wanna go to hell with me? It doesn’t matter does it. We are the hunters. We kill the weak so the strong survive. You can’t stop the new world. Your filthy society will never get rid of people like us. It’s breeding them. WE ARE THE FUTURE!”
Cobretti cries, “No! You’re History!” as he readies to fire his gun. Still goading Cobretti, the mad man continues:
“You won’t do it, pig. You won’t shoot. Murder is against the law. You have to take me in...if...you...can. Even I have rights. Don’t I, pig? Take me in. They’ll say I am insane. Won’t they? The court is civilized. Isn’t it, pig?”
To that, Cobretti coldly replies, “But I’m not. This is where the law stops...and I start - sucker!.”
At the conclusion of a vicious hand-to-hand combat, Cobretti lifts up the bad guy and impales him on a conveyor belt hook that carries the criminal’s body into a blast furnace.
Note: Earlier in the film, Cobretti says, “You have the right to remain silent” and then tosses a lit match onto the gasoline-soaked body of a gunman who tries to kill him.
Some more of Cobretti's clever lines:
- "As long as we play by these bullshit rules and the killer doesn't, we're gonna lose!"
- "Hey dirtbag, you're a lousy shot. I don't like lousy shots. You wasted a kid... for nothing. Now I think it's time to waste you!"
