When things do not go her way, she gets even, which is what she wants to do to Court Reynolds, her ex-lover who dumped her for another, namely, Cecile Caldwell (Selma Blair).
To hurt her ex-boyfriend, she asks Sebastian to seduce Cecile so she can destroy their relationship. But Sebastian has eyes for another girl, the virginal Annette Hargrove (Reese Witherspoon), who has declared that she wants to save herself until she finds the right person and then enjoy sex on their wedding night. Sebastian can't wait to destroy her reputation.
Kathryn is taken back by Sebastian's refusal to help her in her cause, and doubting Sebastian's ability to win over Annette, she makes a bet with her brother. If he can seduce Annette and have her fall in love with him, Kathryn will let him have sex with her (and "put it anywhere"), which is something that Sebastian had been wanting ever since their parents married.
However, if Sebastian fails to win the bet, Kathryn will take possess of his classic 1956 Jaquar roadster. Sebastian accepts the bet and begins to woo Annette, meanwhile, Kathryn befriends Cecile under the guise of a mentor in the ways of love, but in the end, she only wants to destroy her as well.
|Kathryn:||Oh, Sebastian? That little wager of yours? Count me in.|
|Sebastian:||What are the terms?|
|Kathryn:||If I win, then that hot little car of yours is mine.|
|Sebastian:||And if I win?|
|Kathryn:||I'll give you something you've been obsessing about ever since our parents got married.|
|Sebastian:||Be more specific.|
|Kathryn:||In English? I'll fuck your brains out.|
|Sebastian:||What makes you think I'll go for that bet? That is a 1956 Jaguar Roadster.|
|Kathryn:||Because I'm the only person you can't have, and it kills you.|
|Sebastian:||No way. [Starts to leave room]|
|Kathryn:||You can put it anywhere...|
|Sebastian:||[Stops in his tracks] You've got yourself a bet, baby.|
|Kathryn:||Happy hunting, Sebastian.|
Sebastian begins his move on Annette who is staying at his aunt's house, but Mrs. Caldwell , Cecile's mother had already warned Annette of Sebastian's habit of using women and so his attempt at inital try at bedding Annette is shot down when she refuses his advances.
Resentful of Mrs. Caldwell's interference, Sebastian decides to help Kathryn and seduce Cecile while Kathryn, ever the bitch, snitches to Mrs. Caldwell about her daughter's secretive romance with her music teacher, Ronald Clifford. Of course, her mother sets out to break them up.
|Kathryn:||[on the phone] Fuck her yet?|
|Sebastian:||I'm working on it.|
|Kathryn:||Call me later?|
|Sebastian:||Sure. [hangs up]|
Sebastian again pursues Annette, and this time Annette warms up to Sebastian but still refuses to have sex with him. But when Annette changes her mind, it is Sebastian who refuses her. Saddened by his refusal, Annette flees to her family estate, but Sebastian pursues Annette and both of them make love.
When Sebastian annouces he has won the bet, Kathryn agrees to have sex with him, but Sebastian has fallen deeply in love with Annette, and he refuses to claim his reward.
Infuriated, Kathryn tells Sebastian that she will destroy his own reputation. Fearing the indeed she could destory hiim, he coldly breaks up with Annette. But Sebastian is truly in love with Annette and so he sends his journal which recorded all of his activities and thoughts about his romance with Annette.
"Dear Annette, I don't know what I could possibly say that would rectify the harm I've caused you. The truth of the matter is that being with you was the only time I have ever been happy. My whole life has been a joke. I prided myself on taking joy in others' misery. Well, it finally backfired. I succeed in hurting the first person I ever loved. Enclosed is my most prized possession. My journal. For a long time I considered it my trophy. A sordid collection of my conquests. If you really want to know the truth than please read it. No more lies. Please give me another chance. I'm a wreck without you." - Sebastian
Meanwhile, Kathryn continues her onslaught by informing Ronald, that Sebastian made love to Cecile. And then she tells Sebastian, who believes he can now claim the right of bedding Kathryn, that her real plan was to destroy him, in the bargain.
|Sebastian:||What shall we toast to?|
|Kathryn:||To my triumph.|
|Sebastian:||It's not my choice of toast, but it's your call. To your triumph over Annette. [Kathryn laughs]|
|Sebastian:||What's so funny?|
|Kathryn:||Silly rabbit. My triumph isn't over her. It's over you.|
|Kathryn:||You were very much in love with her. And you're still in love with her. But it amused me to make you ashamed of it. You gave up on the first person you ever loved because I threatened
your reputation. Don't you get it? You're just a toy, Sebastian. A little toy I like to play with. And now you've completely blown it with her. I think it's the saddest thing I've ever heard. [drinks champagne] Tastes good. So, I assume you've come here to make arrangements. But unfortunately, I don't fuck losers.
This revelation spells the end of Kathryn and her reign of terror when Ronald confronts Sebastian for a showdown. As they fight each other, Annette, who has read the journal and now knows the whole truth, rushes to Sebastian's side to intervene, but she is thrown in front of an oncoming taxi cab. To save her life, Sebastian pushes her to safety, but is hit in the process. As he lay dying, Annette and Sebastian proclaim their eternal love.
At Sebastian's funeral, Cecile hands out printed copies of Sebastian's Journal which she entitled "Cruel Intentions" that reveals all of the evil machinations spawned by Sebastian's step-sister. It is now Kathryn's reputation that is on deplay for all to see, including the fact that she keeps cocaine in her crucifix necklace.
With Kathryn's social standing destroyed, Annette recalls her happy tiimes with Sebastian as she drives his Jaguar down the highway. By her side, sits a copy of his personal journal.
Note: The film Cruel Intentions is based on a 1782 French play by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos.
