"You have the right to remain silent, so shut the fuck up!"
Description - The official request of LAPD police detective Lee Butter (Chris Rock) as he struggles to cuff a suspect in the motion picture Lethal Weapon 4 (1998). Lee continues by saying, “You have the right to get an attorney. If you can’t afford one, we’ll get you the dumbest goddamn lawyer we’ve got. If you get Johnnie Cochrane, I’ll kill ya!”
In the first Lethal Weapon (1987) undercover cop Matrin Riggs (Mel Gibson) lampoons the Miranda Rights by advising a knocked out criminal, “You have the right to remain unconscious. Anything you say...ain’t gonna be much!”
Note: In the film Running Scared (1986) Billy Crystal as Chicago cop Danny Costanzo points his gun at an Hispanic crook and says, “Habla Smith & Wesson. You have the right to be...dead. You have the right to a coroner.”
In the film Psycho Cop Returns (1993) Officer Joe Vickers (Robert R. Shafer) says, “You have the right to remain dead. Anything you say can and will be considered very strange because you're dead. You have the right to an attorney, but it won't do you any good because you're dead. Do you understand these rights that have just been read to you? Are you even listening? It would be a lot easier if you were a little more cooperative!”
And, on the episode “Switched at Birth” (10/8/94) of the science fiction sitcom WEIRD SCIENCE bully older brother Chett (Lee Tergesen) advises teenager Gary Wallace (John Mallory Asher), “You have the right to beg for mercy. You have the right to a speedy butt-kick. My fists can and will be used against you. If you choose to scream, your scream will not be heard above the sound of my laughter.”
