"Ladies and gentlemen, I can envision a day when the brains of brilliant men can be kept alive in the bodies of dumb people." - Dr. Michael Hfuhruhurr
After the surgery, Michael falls in love and marries Dolores, who, in reality, only wants his money. |Butler:||You and your wife are expected for dinner.|
|Dr. Michael Hfuhruhurr:||My wife won't be coming.|
|Butler:||Oh, I trust she is not ill?|
|Dr. Michael Hfuhruhurr:||She's not ill, she's a cheap, vulgar slut.|
|Butler:||Ja, I have heard this.|
Soon after, Michael and Dolores travel to Vienna to attend a medical conference where they learn of a series of gruesome murders committed by a killer dubbed "The Elevator Killer" and Michael meets meets the mysterious mad scientist Dr. Alfred Necessiter (David Warner), who has experimented with keeping human brains alive in jars.
As Michael observes a room of glass jars filled with brains, he discovers he can communicate telepathically with one of the brains in the room, a brain belonging to a woman named Anne Uumellmahaye (Sissy Spacek) with whom Michael forms a romantic relationship.
On one occasion, Michael takes Anne's jar on a rowboat ride and confesses his true feelings. But when Dolores realizes she has competition, she tries to kill Anne but fails. Outraged, Michael disowns Dolores and throws her our of his house and into a puddle of mud as he shouts "Into the mud. scum queen!"
Earlier, Michael had told Dolores that he wanted a divorce when he found her cheating, and shouted, "Dolores, I'm making a citizen's divorce. By the power vested in me, I hereby declare our marriage null and void! E Pluribus Unum."
Now totally in love with Anne, Michael searches for ways they can be together as a couple. Dr. Necessiter suggests putting her brain into a gorilla, but Michael admits '"I couldn't fuck a gorilla." Then the doctor comes up with an alternative solution. He could try to implant Anne's brain into the body of a newly deceased female body. Michael, at first, tries to kill a prostitute, but when he realizes her voice is so high and annoying, he decides he could not love Anne with a voice like that.
Luckily for Michael, as he steps into an elevator, he finds Dolores dead, killed by the very same Elevator Killer who has been frightening the city of Vienna. As Michael looks upon the face of the serial killer,and exclaims "You! You’re the elevator killer! Merv Griffin!”
Shocked, Michael asks “Why?” Merv took up killing, to which he replies, “I don’t know. I’ve always just loved to kill. I really enjoyed it. But then I got famous, and - it’s just too hard for me. And so many witnesses. I mean, everybody recognized me. I couldn’t even work anymore. I’d hear, ‘Who’s that lurking over there? Isn’t that Merv Griffin?’ So I came to Europe to kill. And it’s really worked out very well for me.”
Ignoring Merv's murderous deed, Michael transports Dolores dead boy via automobile to Dr. Necessiter's lab, but is pulled over by the police who give Michael a silly and very hard sobriety test. He passes, but when the policeman realize that Dolores is not drunk but dead, they pursue Michael who rushes back to Dr. Necessiter who performs the operation, just as the police arrive. As the police realize that Dolores (now Anne) is not dead, Michael is accidentally electrocuted by equipment in the lab and wakes up six weeks later from a coma to discover Anne has gained a lot of weight, since in her former life she had an eating problem. Undeterred by her larger body, Michael declares his love for Anne and they marry.
Meanwhile, Merv Griffin is still on the loose andas the movie ends, a narrator tells the audience: "Merv Griffin did not turn himself in and is at large. If you have any information as to his whereabouts, call your local theatre manager"
