"Snap out of it!"
Description: Cher as Loretta Castorini expressing her anger at Ronny Cammareri (Nicholas Cage), a brooding Italian baker in the motion picture Moonstruck (1987).
Loretta is a bookkeeper who accepts a proposal of marriage from Johnny Cammareri (Danny Aiello), the best friend of her late husband. When she learns there is bad blood between Johnny and his brother, Ronny, Loretta visits a small Brooklyn bakery where Ronny spends his day shoving bread dough into hot ovens.
"They say bread is life. And I bake bread, bread, BREAD. And I sweat and shovel this stinkin' dough in and out of this hot hole in the wall, and I should be SO happy! Huh, sweetie?"
Having lost his left hand in a bread slicing accident caused by Johnny ("He made me look the wrong way!"), Ronny occassionally get disheartened and requests his coworkers to help him kill himself. "Bring me the big knife, I’m gonna cut my throat!"
Loretta asks Ronny to put aside past differences and attend their wedding, but Johnny shouts, “I'm no friggin' monument to justice! I lost my hand! I lost my bride! Johnny has his hand! Johnny has his bride! You want me to take my heartache, put it away and forget?” Soon after, Johnny becomes smitten with Loretta.
|Ronny:||You're gonna marry my brother? Why you wanna sell your life short? Playing it safe is just about the most dangerous thing a woman like you could do. You waited for the right man the first time, why didn't you wait for the right man again?|
|Loretta:||He didn't come!|
Within a short time, Loretta falls under the spell of this charming, earthy baker and against her better judgment, she shares a night of romance with him.
Waking the next morning, Loretta sees Johnny and shutters, "Oh my God!..You ruined my life!" Ronny disagrees as Loretta continues, "Oh, yes, you did! Oh, yes, you did! Y'know, you got them bad eyes, like a gypsy, and I don't know why I didn't see it yesterday. Bad luck! That's what it is. Is that all I'm ever gonna have? I should have taken a rock and killed myself years ago!"Realizing her mistake, she tells Johnny "Last night never happened, you hear me? I'm gonna marry him (Johnny) anyway and last night never happened, and you and I are gonna take this to our coffins!" But Johnny can't do it because, as he says, “I’m in love with you.” A confused Loretta smacks him twice in the face and yells, “Snap out of it!”
Professing his love, Johnny educates Loretta to the realities of the world.
"Everything seems like nothing to me now, 'cause I want you in my bed. I don't care if I burn in hell. I don't care if you burn in hell. The past and the future is a joke to me now. I see that they're nothing. I see they ain't here. The only thing that's here is you - and me."
“But love don’t make things nice. It ruins everything. It breaks your heart. It makes things a mess. We aren’t here to make things perfect. The snowflakes is perfect. The stars are perfect. Not us. Not us. We are here to ruin ourselves and to break our hearts and love the wrong people and die. The storybooks are bullshit! Now I want you to come upstairs with me and get in my bed!”
The romance between Ronny and Loretta blossomed as Johnny was out of the country visiting his sick mother in Palermo, Italy. When he returns earlier than expected ("It's a miracle") Loretta goes to the airport to meet him. While she waits, an old lady asks if she has anyone on the plane and then shares a secret with Loretta.
"I put a curse on that plane. My sister is on that plane. I put a curse on that plane that it's gonna explode, burn on fire and fall into the sea. Fifty years ago, she stole a man from me. S'aprese il mio uomo! Today she tells me that she never loved him, that she took him to be strong on me. Now she's going back to Sicily. Ritorna in Sicilia! I cursed her that the green Atlantic water should swallow her up!"
Loretta tells the old lady "I don't believe in curses." Shrugging her shoulders, the old lady admits, " Eh, neither do I." Within a short time, Johnny's plane lands safely and Loretta informs Johnny that she doesn't really love him, but she does love his brother, Ronny.
In the end, Johnny forgives Loretta, makes up with his brother and everyone lives happily ever after. Or at least, as happy as two hot-heated Italians can be.
Note: The title of the film Moonstruck is envoked by the comment of an old man in the movie who says, "La bella luna! The moon brings the woman to the man. Capice?"
Some other fun lines in the movie:
When Loretta says to her mother, Rose (Olympia Dukakis) , "Aw, ma, I love him awful." Rose responds, "Oh, God, that's too bad. When you love them they drive you crazy because they know they can."
Rose can't stand it when Grandpa Castorini (Feodor Chaliapin Jr.) feeds her good food to animals, and so, she shouts,"Old man, you give those dogs another piece of my food and I'm gonna kick you 'til you're dead!"
And finally, Rose says, "My mother has a saying. Do you want to hear it?...Don't shit where you eat!"
