Forrest Taft is a specialist in oil rig fires. When an Aegis Oil Company refinery rig in Valdez, Alaska catches fire, Forrest is called to tackle the blaze and extinguishes it with explosives. Later, Forrest discovers that the oil rig fire was caused by "sub-standard" equipment, as was revealed earlier by Hugh Palmer, the elderly foreman of the rig who said the refinery ''preventers' were "Not up to specs."
Unfortunately, Michael Jenning (Michael Caine), the corrupt corporate CEO of Aegis Oil orders Hugh Palmer killed to prevent his story from keeping the refinery from going on line within the next thirteen days. If that happened, the company's rights to the land would legally revert back to local Eskimos and the Alaskan Government.
|McGruder:||At present count, you only have ten fingers. I honestly don't want to have to ask you ten times. Where are your books? I want the DISKS, and I WANT THOSE BOOKS!|
|Hugh Palmer:||I'm tellin' you I don't HAVE THEM!|
|McGruder:||Have you LISTENED to yourself lately! HAVE YOU! Everything with you is I-I-I! There is no I in team! It is T-E-A-M. TEAM! [McGruder orders a guy to break Hugh's right forefinger]|
When Jennings learns that Forrest Taft also knows about the problem with the refinery, he arranges an explosion that is supposed to kill him, but Taft survives and is rescued by woman named Masu (Joan Chen), the daughter of Silook (Chief Irvin Brink), the chief of her tribe who gives Taft shelter in a small Eskimo community so he can recover from his injuries. When he recovers, Taft sets out on a quest to avenge his friend's murder and shut down AEGIS-1 before it goes on line and destroys the surrounding environment.
Realizing that Forrest is still alive, CEO Jennings hires New Orleans based mercenaries to take him out. As a group of bad guys prepare to hunt Taft, their leader Stone informs his troops:
“My guy in D.C. tells me that we are not dealing with a student here, we're dealing with the Professor. Any time the military has an operation that can’t fail, they call this guy in to train the troops, OK? He’s the kind of guy that would drink a gallon of gasoline so he could piss in your campfire! You could drop this guy off at the Arctic Circle wearing a pair of bikini underwear, without his toothbrush, and tomorrow afternoon he’s going to show up at your poolside with a million dollar smile and fist full of pesos. This guy’s a professional—you got me? If he reaches this rig, we’re all gonna be nothing but a big goddamned hole right in the middle of Alaska. So let’s go find him and kill him and get rid of the son of a bitch!”
Taft eludes the mercenaries, (killing few of them along the way), infiltrates the refinery with a cache of weapons and explosives and begins to destroy it. “Who the fuck is he?”asks an oil company associate. To which, CEO Jennings replies, “You wanna know who he is? Try this: delve down into the deepest bowels of your soul. Try to imagine the ultimate fucking nightmare. And that won’t come close to that son of a bitch, when he gets pissed." Taft is an ex-CIA agent trained in sabotage and demolition.
As Taft's plan to shut the oil refinery down succeeds, all of the workers begin to flee the burning facility. Jenning orders his fleeing workers to come back, but they refuse, making him shout, "You're a bunch of GUTLESS PRICKS! ALL OF YOU! You yellow BASTARD!"
In the end, Taft blows up the oil rig, drops CEO Jennings into a pool of oil, and prevents the refinery from going on line, thus allowing the local Eskimos to gain possession of the land upon which the oil refinery rests.
Note: At the beginning of the film, after Taft puts out the oil rig fire, he goes to a honky tonk called "Abby's" and sees an drunken Eskimo (Jules Desjarlais) being abused by a loudmouth guy named Big Mike (Mike Starr) who tells the man, "Listen to me you yellow snow eating, welfare collecting, redskin piece of shit, GET THE FUCK OUT OF HERE!" Mike then calls the man, "Tonto," "Pocahontas,"Geronimo," and "Dances With Whiskey."
Irritated at the way, Big Mike treated the man with such disrespect, Forrest stares at Big Mike who says "Hey, Cupcake, what the fuck you think you're looking at?" Forrest replies, "Nothing much at all."
A bunch of oil rig worker attack Forrest and one by one he cracks their heads, breaks their arms and throws them through a window. Finished, Forrest says, "Well, let's see. That's natives 8; oil workers 0. Anyone else wanna play with Cupcake?”
To teach Big Mike a lesson, Forrest challenges him to a hand-slap game. "I miss, you get a shot; you miss, I get a shot." Mike says"OK, I'll play your game, if you play MY game." Forrest replies, "I'll play your game afterwards, if I'm still standing. 'Cause I might not be. 'Cause you're a tough guy, you're a man, and you've got big balls....Here we go, Mr. Big Balls."
Forrest wins the first round, knocks Big Mike to the floor with one punch, and says, "This is The Man's man. And I'm the Cupcake." Forrest pounds the man two more times, and then says, "What does it take to change the essence of man?" Big Mike, bloody and beaten says, "I need time to change." Forrest replies, "I do, too. I do, too," and then pats Big Mike on the shoulder and leaves the bar.
