"You watch your mouth, buddy."
Description - The parking lot eulogy delivered by Louise Sawyer (Susan Sarandon) to a redneck rapist in the motion picture Thelma and Louise ( 1991).
In the film, two Arkansas women - Thelma Dickerson (Geena Davis), a married woman and Louise Sawyer (Susan Sarandon), her single waitress friend - decide to take a two-day vacation to a cabin in the mountains. So, on a Friday afternoon, Louise arrives at Thelma's house in her green '66 Thunderbird ready for a fun weekend getaway. Little did they know, that this trip would be their last.
Thelma left home without permisson, because she knew her husband, Darryl would never let her go. As Thelma put it, "All he wants me to do is hang around the house all day." To be considerate, Thelma left him a note stuck to the microwave.
Among the things Thelma packed was a .38mm revolver. Uncomfortable with firearms, she asks, "Oh, Louise. Will you take care of this gun?" Louise shouts, "Why in the hell did you bring that for? Thelma replies, "Oh come on, pyscho-killers, bears, snakes. I just don't know how to use it. Will you take care of it?" Louise puts the gun in her purse for safe keeping, saying ,"Good Lord!"
Later in the day, the two women drink, dance and party at the Silver Bullet honky tonk. Thelma meets a guy named Harland Puckett (Timothy Carhart) and goes into the parking lot with him. When Thelma refuses Harland's sexual advances, he says, “I’m not gonna hurt you” and then proceeds to slap her around and rape her. Out of the dark, Thelma’s best friend Louise Sawyer jams a pistol into the man’s face. “You let her go now or I am gonna splatter your ugly face all over this nice car.”
As Louise (herself, a victim of rape) walks away, she advises, “In the future, when a woman’s crying like that, she isn’t having any fun." Instead of taking her council, Harland cries, “Bitch! I should have gone ahead and fucked her.” Louise turns and says, "What did you say?" Harland responds, “I said, 'Suck my cock'.” Louise snaps and fires the gun into his chest. As she stands over his lifeless body, Louise whispers, “You watch your mouth, buddy.”
Believing the police wouldn’t understand, (“You shoot off a guy’s head with his pants down, believe me, Texas ain’t the place you want to get caught.”) Thelma and Louise elude the authorities and head for Mexico. Thelma later confides to Louise, “I am not the least sorry that son of a bitch is dead. I am just sorry it was you who did it instead of me.”
As the girls flee the scene and head south via Oklahoma City, Thelma realizes they are running low on cash and so she decides to rob a roadside store.
|Thelma:||[jumping into the car] Driiive Louise! Drive! Drive the car! Go! Go! Go go go go go!|
|Louise:||What happened? You robbed the store? You robbed the God damn store?|
|Thelma:||Well, we needed the money. It's not like I killed anybody for God's sake!|
|Thelma:||I'm sorry, we needed the money, now we have it.|
|Louise:||Oh shit! Oh shit! Oh shit! Thelma!|
|Thelma"||Louise, Louise, Come on. Get a grip. Get us down to God damn Mexico, will you?|
|Louise:||Oh shit! Oh shit! Well, how did you...I mean, whata, what did you say?|
|Thelma:||Well, I just walsed on right in there, and said...|
[FBI reviewing robbery video from the store]
Good morning ladies and gentlemen, this is a robbery. Now if nobody loses their head, nobody will lose their head. Simon says you all lie down on the floor, please, right away, Hup two. Ma'am will you sit down? Not you, sir. Let's see who wins a prize for keeping their cool. Sir, would you do the honors and take all that cash out that drawer and put it in a paper bag.
|Thelma:||You'll have a major story to tell yall our friends,if not, you'll have tag on your toe, you decide. Hurry up let's go.|
|Thelma:||Ma'am could you be quiet. Sit down, sir. Thank you. Just stay there. Just get real comfortable. Hey, uh, throw in a few bottles of Wild Turkey, will you?|
|Thelma:||Now you get down, too.|
|Thelma:||Ladies and gentlman, I thank you all for your cooperation. Now stay down on the floor until I'm gone and have a good day.|
On the lamb, the girls encounter a salacious trucker who propositions them and so they signal him to pull off the road. Instead of giving him a good time, the man is asked to apologize for his rude behavior. “You say your sorry or I’m gonna make you sorry,” insists Louise. When he refuses, both Thelma and Louise produce handguns and shoot up his tanker truck, igniting the fuel and blowing it to smithereens. As the girls drive away hooting and a hollering, the trucker screams, “You bitches! You bitches from hell! You’re gonna have to pay for this!”
|Thelma:||Hey Louise, better slow down, I'll just die if we get caught over a speeding ticket. Are you sure we should be driving like this, I mean in broad daylight and everything?|
No we shouldn't, but I want to put some distance between us and the SCENE OF OUR LAST GOD DAMNED CRIME!
|Thelma:||[Thelma laughs and screams] Oh man! You wouldn'ta believed it, it was like I was doing it all my life, I mean, nobody woulda believed it.|
|Louise:||Think you found your calling?|
|Thelma:||May-be... may-be...The call of the wild! Whoooo!|
|Louise:||You are disturbed.|
|Thelma:||Yeah, I believe I am.|
At the film’s conclusion, the two women are cornered at a precipice of the Grand Canyon by an army of police vehicles. “Let’s not get caught. Let’s keep going,” pleads Thelma.
“Certain words and phrases just keep drifting through my mind, things like, incarceration, cavity search, death by electrocution, life in prison, shit like that, know what I'm sayin', so do I want to come out alive.”
With a kiss, Louise says goodbye to Thelma and then accelerates her car and drives off the cliff. As they plummet to oblivion, Thelma and Louise clasp hands in a final act of solidarity.
