"You are a total nutcase, completely deranged, delusional, paranoid. Your thought process is all fucked up. Your information train is jammed, man!"

12 Monkeys - Jeffrey Goines berates James Cole

Description: Brad Pitt as Jeffrey Goines, the insane son of a famous scientist who had been incarcerated in a psychiatric facility in the movie 12 Monkeys (1995). Jeffrey is talking with James Cole (Bruce Willis) a time traveler from A.D. 2035 who traveled back in time to stop a lethal virus from wiping out five billion people in a post apocalyptic future.

It all begins when James Cole, a convict in the future is given the chance to reduce his sentence if he volunteers on a research mission that will take him to the past to collect clues about the virus that devastated earth. James agrees but his frequent travels in time begin to muddle his brain and he soon has trouble discerning what is real.

"5 billion people will die from a deadly virus in 1997... The survivors will abandon the surface of the planet...Once again the animals will rule the world..." - James Cole, Baltimore County Hospital interview, April 12, 1990.

When James arrives in the year 1990, six years earlier than planned, he is placed in a psychiatric ward where he meets Jeffrey Goines, whose father has hospitalized his son for his own good. While there he befriends Cole and gives him a key to break out of the ward.

During Cole's stay at the hospital, he is put under the psychiatric care of Dr. Kathryn Railly (Madeleine Stowe) who at first believes Cole's tales of time travel are delusions. But when she come upon a photograph of a WWI soldier that looks exactly like Cole and the bullet in his body from that period, she begins to believe his tale. ("You had a bullet from World War I in your leg, James! How did it get there?")

Meanwhile, Cole keeps searching for clues about The Army of the 12 Monkeys which he hopes will lead him to the person responsible for the horrible virus that killed billions. And, if he can get a hold of a sample of the virus, he can take it back to the future and they can study the original virus before it mutated and became an ever greater threat.

Louie: Where'd they send you?
James Cole: 1990.
Louie: '90! How was it? Good drugs? Lots of pussy? Hey, Bob, you do the job? You find out the big info? Army of the 12 Monkeys?
James Cole: I was supposed to be 1996.
Louie: Science ain't an exact science with these clowns but, they're getting better. You're lucky you didn't end up in ancient Egypt!

Cole's primary suspect is Jeffrey Goines, an insane spoiled rich kid. His father, Leland Goines, is a famous virologist, and Cole suspects that Jeffrey is the one who let loose the deadly virus on the world.

12 Monkeys - Zoo animals released by Jeffrey Goines

But it turns out that Jeffrey is not the culprit. Instead, he is an avid animal activist who planned to release all of the animals in the local zoo as a protest, using The Army of the 12 Monkeys as his mantra.

Dr. Kathryn Railly: If you don't turn yourself over to the police, they're going to, to kill you, then they're going to shoot me too because I'm going to be the accessory to murder.
James Cole: You're all gonna die.
Dr. Kathryn Railly: Nobody is going to die! You're not going to save the world, okay? You're delusional. You've made all this up out of bits and pieces in your head.
James Cole: No.
Dr. Kathryn Railly: Yes! Let me give you an example. You know Jeffrey Goines. You were both patients at County Hospital at the same time.
James Cole: Jeffrey Goines was a fruitcake!

Later, Cole confronts Jeffrey still believing that he is the one responsible for the viral infection of the futture. Entering Jeffrey's home during a formal party, Cole manhandles Jeffrey and yells, "Listen, you dumb fuck! The thing mutates — We live underground! The world belongs to the — the fucking dogs and cats. We’re like moles or worms. All we want to do is study the original!" Jeffrey then knocks Cole over a balcony and he flees. Katherine and James later follow Jeffrey to the airport. During a traffic jam, a taxi driver reveals that some crackpot group called "The Army of the 12 Monkeys'' released animals from the zoo.

As Cole follows the real target to the airport, he is given a gun by another time traveler previously sent to the past who urges Cole to shoot Goines, but before he can, Cole is shot by security. As he dies, Dr. Railly arrives and holds him in her arms. As James slowly slips away, Katherine sees the face of a small boy staring. The boy is Cole when he was 12 years old. The sight of a man (himself) being killed in the airport had haunted Cole his while life.

12 Monkeys - The doctor from the future with Dr. Peters

Luckily, before he was shot, Cole sent a voice mail message to a Carpet Cleaning Company (the way the future keeps track of his activities) and tells his bosses their theory about the Army of the 12 Monkeys is wrong.

“The Freedom For Animals Association on 2nd Avenue is the—is the secret headquarters of the Army of the 12 Monkeys. They’re the ones who are going to do it. I can’t do anymore, I have to go now. Have a Merry Christmas.” - James Cole [sends a voice mail message to the future]

In response, another time traveler, a doctor, arrives and shares a seat on an airplane with the real culprit, a radical virologist from Goines' father's laboratory, one Dr. Peters (David Morse). His trip agenda matched all of the cities where the virus outbreaks began. With his identity known, his plans would be terminated and the future could possibly be changed.
