Unforgiven - Will Munny: Gunfighter

Description: Widowed Kansas gunfighter Will Munny (Clint Eastwood) warns townfolks in the western Unforgiven (1992).

Coming out of retirement to earn money for his children, William "Will" Munny, his colleague, Ned Logan (Morgan Freeman) and The Schofield Kid (Jaimz Woolvett), a novice gunfighter take the job of avenging the mutilation of Delilah Fitzgerald (Anna Levine), a frontier prostitute. The reward: $1000. The targets: Quick Mike (David Mucci) and "Davey-Boy" Bunting (Rob Campbell).

Ned: Hell, Will. We ain't bad men no more. Shit, we're farmers.
Will: Should be easy killing them, supposing they don't go on down to Texas first.
Ned: How long has it been since you fired a gun at a man, Will? Nine, ten years?
Will: Eleven.
Ned: Easy, huh? Hell, I don't know that it was all that easy even back then. And we was young and full of beans. I mean, if you was mad at 'em, Will, I mean. If they'd done you some wrong, I could see shooting 'em.
Will: We done stuff for money before, Ned.
Ned: Yeah, we thought we did. All right, so what did these fellas do? Cheat at cards? Steal some strays? Spit on a rich fella? What?
Will: No, they cut up a woman.
Ned: What?
Will: Yeah, they cut up her face, cut her eyes out, cut her fingers off, cut her tits, everything but her cunty, I suppose.
Ned: I'll be dogg - Golly, I guess they got it comin'. 'Course, you know, Will, if Claudia was alive you wouldn't be doin' this.

Before Will and his companions arrive in the town of Big Whiskey, Wyoming to kill the cowboys who multuilated Delilah, a gunfighter named English Bob (Richard Harris) shows up to claim the reward, but Sheriff "Little Bill" Daggett (Gene Hackman), the town's heavy-handed lawman takes objection to English Bob's proscribing justice in his territory. As a matter of fact, Daggett sees no problem with the way the prostitute was treated. He also does not like "assassins or men of low character."

Sheriff Daggett orders English Bob to hand over his guns and then throttles the gunfighter before sending him packing. As English Bob reluctantly leaves Daggett's town, he admonishes his tormentors:

Unforgiven - English Bob leaves town

"A plague on you! A plague on the whole stinking lot of ya, without morals or laws! And all you whores got no laws! You got no honor! It’s no wonder you all emigrated to America, because they wouldn’t have you in England! You’re a lot of savages, that’s what you all are. A bunch of bloody savages! A plague on you! I'll be back!”

A short time later, Will and his companions arrive in town during a rainstorm. Ned has a fever so he sits down to have a drink in the saloon. Ned and The Kid are a bit more frisky and head upstairs to spend some time with the prostitutes, whom they came to assist. Unfortunately, Sheriff Daggett enters the saloon, finds a pistol on Will's person and decides to beat him and throw him out of the saloon and into the mud. Hearing the commotion, Ned and The Kid skedaddle and meet up with Will in a barn outside of town where they nurse Will back to health.

After Will recovers, the three ambush and kill Bunting. But Ned decides he has had enough of killing and goes back to Kansas. Meanwhile, The Kid tracks down and kills Quick Mike at an outhouse.

As Will waits out of town for the reward to be delivered, Little Sue (Tara Frederick), one of the prostitutes brings them the $1000 reward, but in doing so, she informs Will that Ned was caught, beaten and killed by Sheriff Daggett. Will gives the reward money to The Kid to bring back to Kansas and returns to Big Whisky to avenge Ned's death.

Unforgiven - Will Munny out for Revenge

As Sheriff Daggett and his deputies celebrate the killing of Ned at the town saloon, Will enters the room with a shotgun. "You'd be William Munny out of Missouri. Killer of women and children," says sheriff Daggett. "That's right," Will answers, "I've killed women and children. I've killed just about everything that walks or crawled at one time or another. And I'm here to kill you, Little Bill, for what you did to Ned."

A fews second later Will kills Skinny Dubois (Anthony James), the saloon owner, causing Sheriff Daggett to say, “Well, sir, you are a cowardly son of a bitch! You just shot an unarmed man!” Will Munny simply replies, "He should have armed himself if he’s gonna decorate his saloon with my friend.” Ned's body had been put on display in a coffin for everyone to see.

When Will shotgun misfires, he reaches for his six-shooter and begins to kill those who oppose him. To cut down on the death count, Will says, "Any man don't want to get killed better clear on out the back." Of course, most of the people in attendance left the room lickedy-split.

As Will finally gets the drop on the sheriff, who says, “I'll see you in hell, William Munny!" A vengeful Will just pulls the trigger and shoots Daggett dead.

After a brief firefight with some townsfolks, Will yells, “All right now, I’m comin’ out. Any man I see out there, I’m gonna shoot him. Any son of a bitch takes a shot at me, I’m not only gonna kill him, but I’m gonna kill his wife. All his friends. Burn his damn house down.”

As Will prepares to ride out of town, he warns, “You better bury Ned right, better not cut up nor otherwise harm no whores, or I’ll come back and kill every one of you sons of bitches.”
