Maria is the sister of Bernardo (George Shakiris), the leader of the Sharks, a New York City street gang, Newly arrived in America, Maria takes a job at Madame Lucia's Bridal Shop.

Looking for some excitement in her life, Maria attends a dance at a local gym where she sees Tony, a member of the Jets, a white gang and rivals of the Sharks.

As Maria and Tony begin to dance, they fall instantly in love, but Bernardo interrupts their budding romance and tells Maria to go home. Bernardo is not the only one who will disapprove of their romance. Chino (Jose De Vega), one of the Sharks has eyes for Maria and his hatred of his rival will soon bring disaster.

At the dance, Riff (Russ Tamblyn), the leader of the Jets gang, and Bernardo, the Sharks leader have a war council to discuss a fight (a "rumble") that will finally determine who owns the territory in the area. Tony, a cofounder of the Jets helps negotiate and advocates a fair fight instead of an all-out street war. They accept the terms and prepare for the inevitable showdown.

[Lt. Schrank and Officer Krumpke approach members of the Sharks and Jets street gang.]
Lt. Schrank: All right, wise guys. Now you listen to me. All of ya! You hoodlums don't own these streets. And I've had all the roughhouse I'm gonna put up with around here! You wanna kill each other, kill each other! But you ain't gonna do it on my beat. Are there any questions?
Bernardo: Yes sir. Would you mind translating that into Spanish?
Lt. Schrank: Get your... friends outta here Bernardo. And stay out! [Smiling] Please.
Bernardo: Okay, Sharks. Vamanos. [The Sharks leave]
Lt. Schrank: Boy oh boy! As if this neighborhood wasn't crummy enough!
  [Speaking pleasantly to the Jets]
Lt. Schrank: Now look, fellas. Let's be reasonable. If I don't get a little law and order around here, I get busted down to a traffic corner. And your friend don't like traffic corners. So that means you're gonna start making nice with the PRs from now on. Lieutenant Schrank: I said nice, get it? Because if you don't, and I catch any of you doing any more brawlin' in my territory, I'm gonna personally beat the living crud out of each and every one of you and see that you go to the can and rot there. Say good-bye to the nice boys, Krupke.
Officer Krupke: Good-bye, boys.

Meanwhile, Tony, who works at Doc's Candy Store, secretly continues to see Maria. Anita (Rita Moreno), Bernardo's girlfriend thinks Maria and Tony make a wonderful couple and supports their romance, unbeknownst to Bernardo.

Later, when Maria learns of the fight between the Jets and the Sharks she pleads with Tony to intercede and stop the upcoming confrontation.

On the day of the rumble, Tony tries to stop the fight, but he is mocked by the rival gang members. Standing up for his friend, Riff punches Bernardo, and both gang leaders draw their switchblades and Bernardo kills Riff.

West Side Story - The Rumble

Enraged at the death of his best friend, Tony kills Bernardo with Riff's switchblade. The place explodes as both gangs begin to battle each other until the sound of police sirens sends the gangs scattering. The only two remaining are the dead body's of Riff and Bernardo.

Chino is the first to reach Maria, and when he realizes that she loves Tony, he tells her that Tony killed her brother, and then leaves. A short time later, Tony rushes to Maria to explain what happened. Because her love for Tony is so great, she forgives him. The jealous Chino later searches the street for Tony with gun in hand.

Delayed by the police, who want to interview her about the recent street fight, Maria sends Anita to Doc's Candy Store where she and Tony were to rendezvous before they ran away together, but she encounters members of the Jets who manhandle her.

In anger, Anita tells them that Maria is dead, shot by Chino. When Tony hears the horrible news, Tony wanders through the streets shouting for Chino to kill him, too, because he can't live with out Maria's love.

When Tony stumbles onto a playground and sees Maria alive, he can't believe his eyes and rushes to her. Just then Chino shoots Tony. As he dies in Maria's arms, Tony professes his love for her.

To stop the violence, Maria takes Chino's gun and accuses everyone in attendance for their part in the murder.

"All of you! You all killed him! And my brother, and Riff. Not with bullets, or guns, with hate. Well now I can kill, too, because now I have hate!"

The police soon arrive, arrest Chino and members of both rival gangs lift Tony's body on high and carry him away in an expression of solidarity.

Excerpts for "Gee, Officer Krumpke" song

Dear kindly Sergeant Krupske
You gotta understand
It's just our bringin' upke
That gets us out of hand
Our mothers all are junkies
Our fathers all are drunks
Golly Moses, natcherly we're punks

My daddy beats my mommy
My mommy clubbers me
My grand'pa is a commie
My grand'ma pushes tea
My sisters wears a moustache
My brother wears a dress
Goodness gracious, that's why I'm a mess
